Catherine passed away quietly at home on May 20, 2016, surrounded by her daughters Patty and Jackie along with our wonderful Misty.
A celebration of her life will be held May 25, 2016, at Good Shepard Lutheran Church, Sarasota, Florida at 1:00. A sharing of memories will follow in the church hall.
Catherine is survived by her daughters, Patricia Chiszar, Jackie Follmer and Barbara Glasnap; her two grandsons, Richard Follmer (Heather) of Grovetown, Georgia, and Donald Follmer (Tiffany) of Ashland, Oregon ; four great grandchildren, Travis, Samantha, Dalton and Eden; a niece Diane West and nephew Lance Almon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sigrid and Gover Almon, brother John Almon and sister Lucille Almon.
Catherine lived a wonderful and adventurous life. She started her adult life as a military wife and all of the wondering surprises that brings. In the mid 60's she built and ran an exercise and message therapy salon. One of her daughter's classmates said, "She was ahead of her time."
After moving to Florida she went to work for the Internal Revenue Service for a time. She then went back to school and earned her associates degree in accounting. From there she became a financial consultation and tax specialist. Catherine wrote two books, Divorce a Practical Guide and Suddenly Alone.
Her interests were as varied as she was. She was a Silver Life Master with American Contract Bridge Association, and a longtime member of the Sarasota Women's Club. She was also a member of the American Booksellers Association. Catherine was a wonderful quilter. She belonged to the Sarasota Quilters Guild as well as two local quilt cottage groups.
Catherine lived her motto, when you're knocked down you just have to pick yourself up and do what makes you happy. She traveled throughout the United States and Europe and reveled in each new experience. Catherine was a wonderful quilter and loved the colors she could bring together to produce some amazing quilts.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sarasota Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Road, Sarasota, Florida, 34238. The care they gave Catherine was wonderful and caring. The aides, nurses and volunteers are truly an amazing group of people.
Catherine was a very special lady. She was most talented with her tax returns business and very creative with her artistic quilt making, art creations, bridge player, etc. She will be surely missed.
With deepest condolences from Kay Waites at Sound Choice Cremation & Burials.
