On Saturday, October 9, 2021, Raymond Jay Quick, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 84, at the Tidewell Hospice Center in Lakewood Ranch, FL.
Raymond "Ray" Quick was born on December 20, 1936, in Lincoln, IL, to John and Orvetta (Dowell) Quick. On November 1, 1958, Ray married the love of his life, Carolyn Luebkemann, and she survives. Their marriage of almost 63 years was blessed by a daughter, Cynthia, and a son, James.

Ray received a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Western Illinois University in 1962 and was named a distinguished alumni of the university. His career accomplishments included teacher, principal, and acting superintendent of Waverly, IL schools, and in 1993 he ended his career as the Superintendent of Schools with the Illinois Department of Corrections in Springfield. The Corrections school district was an unprecedented success in providing GEDs and higher education achievements to inmates of all the Juvenile and Adult Correctional Centers in the State of IL.

Ray had a passion for both aviation and boating, beginning with his first job at Southwest Airport in Springfield, where he earned his pilot's license. Soon after, he took his passion for aviation to boating with his family and friends to favorite areas, such as Lake Springfield, Mississippi River, Kentucky Lake, Lake Michigan, and even the Gulf of Mexico.

Throughout his career, Ray resided in the central Illinois areas of Waverly and Rochester, IL; both he and Carolyn enjoyed their retirement boating years while living in Green Turtle Bay, KY, and Longboat Key, FL, making lifelong friends. Their family loved to travel to Florida to spend time with them at the home they built in University Park, FL. In turn, Ray and Carolyn would happily travel to the Midwest to visit all their loved ones and friends.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Elmer and Ella Luebkemann, and his much-loved aunt and uncle, Bessie and Ray Graham.

In addition to his loving wife, Carolyn, Ray is survived by his children and grandchildren, of whom he was so proud: Cindy (Vicky Brown) Quick of University Park, FL, and James (Lisa) Quick, of Cedarburg, WI; grandchildren Lauren Hoerchner (Jason) of Appleton, WI, and Jonathan Quick of Los Angeles, CA; brother-in-law Lee Luebkemann; niece Lauri (Rob) Cunningham; nephew Mark (Audrey) Luebkemann; and, grandnieces and grandnephews. As an only child, he also remained close to his Dowell family cousins in Illinois. Ray also left behind his beloved dog, Kandi, who was there to cheer him as he dealt with the harsh realities of Alzheimer's.

In lieu of a memorial service at this time, Ray and Carolyn's ashes will eventually be spread across the Gulf of Mexico.

The Quick Family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to staff at The Sheridan at Lakewood Ranch for taking such excellent care of Ray over the past 5 years.

In lieu of flowers, gifts to honor Raymond J Quick's memory may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, Florida Poodle Rescue, or the charity of choice.

Jim, Cindy and families,
My sympathy to all of you. It was always so enjoyable to visit Carolyn and Ray. I still have trouble remembering to call him "Ray". He was Jay to us for so many years. I'm happy they had several years of great retirement. I know they loved living in Florida. Love, Linda (Dowell
Miller.

I have great memories as child boating with Jay on the Illinois River and Kentucky Lake. He even helped build my boy scout race car. Rest in peace. Michael Lane (jr)
