Eduardo died peacefully in his sleep, at 7:00am Monday, Aug 14th. He had been experiencing a gradual decline in his health over the last few years due to Vascular Parkinsonism and blindness from Macular Degeneration. He made the decision to enter Tidewell Hospice Home Care in October 2022, and they offered support and compassion as he progressed through these final months. He was able to remain at home and die here as he wished. He is finally free of the constraints of his failing body, but we will all miss him so much.
Born in Pedro Betancourt, Matanzas, he grew up primarily in Havana, Cuba. He completed several years of medical school at the Univ of Havana but left there after the revolution. He finished his medical studies at Univ of Santiago, Santiago de Compostela, Spain. He returned to the US for his internship and residencies at UCLA-VA in Los Angeles and Univ of Miami Medical School. He maintained a private practice in Orlando, FL and was a staff psychiatrist at Florida Hospital (Advent Health) and ORMC (Orlando Health). After obtaining an additional board certification in Forensic Psychiatry, he relocated for several years to the Miami area, to be closer to extended family, and to develop more opportunities for forensic work. He returned to the Orlando area and practiced there and in Los Angeles, commuting every 2 weeks. In later years, he began doing locum tenens work in numerous facilities across the US. He was still doing this several times a year up until 2018. After residing in Ecuador for 6 years, he settled in Bradenton, FL. In 2018.
He loved his wife, children, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. His unusual sense of humor and character has led to numerous family tales that are indelibly etched in memory. He always loved listening to and collecting many types of music. He enjoyed traveling and living in foreign countries. Ecuador, Spain, and Columbia are where he lived the longest. He liked gardening, especially growing exotic fruits. If it involved something edible and different, he was the first to try it. He designed several garden ponds, and loved the sounds of the frogs croaking at night. In addition to psychiatry, he had an excellent grasp and memory for many subjects, but he particularly liked geopolitics, alternative health, and investing. Although he was a modest person, he never hesitated to share his views with family and friends, almost always a precautionary tale. He particularly loved working as a psychiatrist, taking on "projects" with goals he could list and check off, seeing old friends, and meeting new people wherever he went. His children loved him and state that he was an amazing and unique man, truly "one of a kind".
He is predeceased by his parents: Florentino Herrera Vento and Sara Ponsdomenech Herrera, his brother, Enrique Herrera, and his two sisters, Lilia Mas, and Kenelma Kubly. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Bishop of Bradenton, FL, his son, Eduardo "Eddie" Herrera, Longwood, Fl., his daughter, Michelle Stewart (Barry), and grandson, Jake Stewart of Apopka FL, and daughter, Cristina Herrera Alfredsson (Fredrik), granddaughter Isabella Alfredsson, grandsons, Oliver and Liam Alfredsson of Hofterup, Sweden.
Rest in peace morfar❤️ I really miss and im grateful for the memories we have together.
Love you❤️
I miss you so so much Dad. I know you found your way to a beautiful orchard of orange trees somewhere warm with ponds and frogs singing songs. You are wearing your blue pajamas with your slippers which I can hear as you shuffle from tree to tree picking oranges. Do me a favor Dad save me an orange because you know I will be there one day and I love oranges too. I love you Dad you are always with me. I will see you later Dad.
Love, Cristinita
