Raymond (Ray) L. Gerharz, 81, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 25th, 2023 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, after a long battle against cancer. Ray was born in Chicago, Illinois to Larry and Betty Gerharz on October 3rd, 1941. Ray attended Palatine High School, class of 1958. Following his graduation he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country aboard the USS St. Paul CA73. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1962. He worked 27 years as a carpenter foreman for Pepper Construction Co., Barrington, IL, and retired in August 2002. Loving husband of Mary (Susie) for 49 years; beloved father of Brian (Carrie); proud grandfather of Samantha and Michael; brother of Elizabeth (Loren) Hunsaker, uncle to Lisa (Alan) Wax, Paul (Michele) Pasko III, Marla (Mark) Bradley and Mark (Roxann) Hunsaker, great uncle to many grand nieces and nephews. Ray was an amazing father and grandfather. He was always involved with his community and loved his family unconditionally. A service of remembrance will be held at 11am on September 22nd, 2023, at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34231. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, cancer.org.
